SOUNDCITY SINGERS (August 2019)
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Johanna Olson just finished her master’s degree in choral conducting from Westminster Choir College and is now the assistant to the music director, artistic liaison and chorale manager for the Seattle Symphony. Johanna previously served as a choral director in Manassas, VA where she received recognition for her ensembles’ consistent superior ratings at state adjudication. Ms. Olson holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Concordia College.
As a performer interested in early music, Johanna studied as a conducting apprentice at the Bach Choral Course in 2018 where she performed with the Kellie Consort and in masterclasses by John Butt and Andrew Parrott. She also completed a course on Handel: Sources and Editing with Dr. Wendy Heller and Malcolm Bruno at Princeton University. Johanna served as the Graduate Assistant Conductor and section leader of Kantorei, the early music ensemble at Westminster Choir College under the tutelage of Dr. Amanda Quist and Dr. Ryan Brandau. Johanna also studied conducting and sang under Dr. Joe Miller. As a choral singer, Johanna performed at the 2018 Spoleto Festival, appears on the Westminster Choir recording of the Frank Martin “Mass for Double Choir” and performed in the first fully staged version of Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles at the 2019 Spoleto Festival. Designing social concert experiences catered to the modern audience.
Instead of sitting and watching, audience members participate in the concert and engage in meaningful dialogue about their experience afterwards. By using electronic programs, our social team collects data and feedback from each event and uses design thinking strategies to come up with an entirely different presentation of the repertoire for the next event.
WHAT DO WE DO:
*Build community and develop social interactions via the arts
*Generate audiences for classical music concerts around our city
*Compensate musicians appropriately for their skills
