English masters Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) and William Byrd (1540-1623) composed during a politically and religiously turbulent period. This program will feature the versatile writing required of Tallis and Byrd during these unstable times and will include a rarely performed Magnificat setting by William Pasche (fl late 15th, early 16th c.), a world premiere recording on the Byrd Ensemble’s recent CD recording, Our Lady: Music from the Peterhouse Partbooks.

Experience Christmas on the Continent in the warm and intimate acoustics of Trinity Parish Church (Downtown Seattle) as the Byrd Ensemble perform Christmas music from Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Accompanying the musical selections will be readings and poetry about each Christmas custom and tradition. This program will feature popular arrangements of traditional Christmas music through the ages by composers J.S. Bach (1685-1750), G. P. Palestrina (1525-1594), Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), T.L. Victoria (1549-1611) and many more.

Musical expressions of death and the afterlife have manifested into some the most hauntingly beautiful pieces ever written. This one-hour program of mystical and transcendent music in collaboration with aerialist Naomi Hummel and Cellist Dylan Rieck promises to be an interaction of artistic medium that will send you out of this world. We will feature composers Herbert Howells (1892-1983), Samuel Barber (1910-1981), Arvo Pärt (b.1935) and local composers Peter Hallock (b.1924), Joshua Haberman(b.1982) and Markdavin Obenza (b.1980).

JOSQUIN and the FRANCO-FLEMISH STYLE

The Franco-Flemish style of polyphonic vocal music composition developed in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. The Franco-Flemish style developed out of the Franco-Flemish School, formed from five generations of composers who were some of the most influential composers of the Renaissance. This program will trace the development of the Franco-Flemish style and will feature composers Josquin dez Prez (c.1450-1521), Heinrich Isaac (c.1450-1517), Adrian Willaert (c.1490-1562) and more.
